One-all draw raised the sporting stakes
Hardy souls braved sub zero temperatures at each of our camps and joined together to watch the best-of-three State of Origin Rugby League matches on the big screens in June and July.
The State of Origin series is an annual rugby league football series between two Australian state representative sides, the New South Wales Blues (also called the ‘Cockroaches’) and the Queensland Maroons (also called the ‘Cane Toads’).
Game One went to the Blues, with NSW triple-thumping Queensland, 18 to six.
Game Two evened the tally with style, as the Maroons defeated NSW, 26 to 24. The Blues were in with a chance until near the end, which was impressive because they finished the first half trailing by 20 points.
And then came Game Three…Queensland held the lead throughout and while NSW showed some scrappy heart at times, the Cane Toads doubled the Cockroaches’ score, 24 points to 12.
Thanks Sodexo for the hot party pies and cold beers, thanks Lifestyle for the popcorn at our remote work sites, and thanks to IT Services for making the big screen tech hum for us at Lobs Hole – especially during Game One, which was a first for the big screen.
Origin of what, now?
For those new to Australian Rugby League, State of Origin is like an all-star match for Queensland players and the New South Welshmen to their south. Each year, top performers are selected from their regular teams to play three matches for the home state. It’s a fierce and friendly rivalry and a one-all draw makes for an exciting third match. The annual series is considered Australia’s greatest sporting rivalry, promoted as ‘state against state, and mate against mate’.
