LATEST TRAFFIC UPDATE 🏗️

Summer holiday period

As construction of the Snowy 2.0 project continues to power ahead, there will be an increase in heavy vehicle movements on roads across the Snowy region throughout 2026.

There has been a steady volume of daytime deliveries to all Snowy 2.0 worksites across the summer. There will be no escorted night-time loads delivered across the Australia Day long weekend but the schedule for heavy vehicles and escorted loads for night-time deliveries is set to ramp up after the public holiday.

All major components for the newest Snowy 2.0 TBM have all been delivered to the Marica site (between Kiandra and Yarrangobilly Caves). TBM Monica is now being assembled.

Take care when driving around the region and we wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

Schedule for night-time deliveries

Large loads transporting electro-mechanical and steel lining components from Port Kembla via Cooma and the Snowy Mountains Highway are being delivered to Lobs Hole.

The following overnight loads are scheduled*:

Temporary traffic management on Snowy Mountains Highway

Temporary traffic management will be in place at multiple locations along the Snowy Mountains Highway between Wambrook Hill and Providence Portal, including adjacent to the new truck parking bay in Adaminaby.

Lane closures will be in place at various locations from 19 January to 6 February 2026 while some power poles are relocated and overhead wires are raised to improve access for tall loads that will be transported along the highway later this year.

Motorists should expect 10-minute delays at each localised work zone between 7am to 5pm. Works will be staggered, with traffic reduced to using a single lane in alternating directions. No work is planned across the long weekend and is subject to weather and conditions.

Transporting major components

Delivery of major components to remote Snowy 2.0 project sites will ramp up in 2026. There will be an increase in movements of oversized loads and these may involve some minor delays for motorists. Some of these loads will involve disruption to traffic through Cooma and the Snowy Mountains Highway.

All oversize moves will be transported under pilot escort and at times, depending on size, police escort. Please always adhere to directions from pilots and NSW Police.

Large, escorted loads will be transported during the daytime and at night. To minimise disruptions to road users and the community, loads wider than 4-metres will travel on the Snowy Mountains Highway at night.

The oversized loads will transport the following major components and material:

  • electro-mechanical components to build turbine units for the underground power station at Lobs Hole

  • steel components for penstocks at Lobs Hole

  • large plant & equipment to all work sites

  • spoil from Marica to Rock Forest.

As work continues on Snowy 2.0 there is ongoing, increased construction traffic in the project area, specifically on the:

  • Monaro Highway

  • Snowy Mountains Highway

  • Link Road, Kiandra

  • Tantangara Road

  • Rock Forest, near entrance to national park.

There will also be increased traffic, including heavy vehicle movements, in and around:

  • Cooma

  • Adaminaby

  • Polo Flat industrial area

  • Tumut

  • Talbingo Range

  • Port of Eden, Edrom Road, Imlay Road, Monaro Highway

  • Bombala

  • Nimmitabel

  • Dalgety

  • Berridale

Trucks on country roads

Residents in Dalgety, Berridale and Adaminaby may see an increase in heavy vehicles travelling along country roads from Maffra and Braemar Bay to the Rock Forest project site on the Snowy Mountains Highway, 12km west of Adaminaby.

This will involve an increase in trucks on the following local roads:

  • The Snowy River Way

  • Dalgety Road

  • Kosciuszko Road

  • Eucumbene Road

  • Rocky Plain Road

  • Middlingbank Road

Road Safety and Traffic Management

Arrangements to manage traffic are in place to minimise safety risks for road users during periods of high traffic flow. Road conditions are also monitored to ensure safety and reliability.

There may be some short-term restrictions applied to certain roads during construction of the project to facilitate the movement of large equipment.

Please note: Severe weather warnings and heavy snowfalls across the Snowy Mountains may impact road conditions. Be careful, be patient and drive to conditions.
