Transporting major components

Delivery of major components to remote Snowy 2.0 project sites will continue in 2025 and 2026. There will be an increase in movements of oversized loads over the coming months, and these may involve some minor delays for motorists. Some of these loads will involve disruption to traffic through Cooma and the Snowy Mountains Highway.

All oversize moves will be transported under pilot escort and at times, depending on size, police escort. Please always adhere to directions from pilots and NSW Police.

Large, escorted loads will be transported during the daytime and at night. To minimise disruptions to road users and the community, loads wider than 4-metres will travel on the Snowy Mountains Highway at night.

The oversized loads will transport the following major components and material:

  • electro-mechanical components to build turbine units for the underground power station at Lobs Hole

  • components for TBM4 at Marica

  • steel components for penstocks at Lobs Hole

  • large plant & equipment to all work sites

  • spoil from Marica to Rock Forest.

As work continues on Snowy 2.0 there is ongoing, increased construction traffic in the project area, specifically on the:

  • Monaro Highway

  • Snowy Mountains Highway

  • Link Road, Kiandra

  • Tantangara Road

  • Rock Forest, near entrance to national park.

There will also be increased traffic, including heavy vehicle movements, in and around:

  • Cooma

  • Adaminaby

  • Polo Flat industrial area

  • Tumut

  • Talbingo Range

  • Port of Eden, Edrom Road, Imlay Road, Monaro Highway

  • Bombala

  • Nimmitabel

Arrangements to manage traffic are in place to minimise safety risks for road users during periods of high traffic flow. Road conditions are also monitored to ensure safety and reliability.

There may be some short-term restrictions applied to certain roads during construction of the project to facilitate the movement of large equipment.

Please note: Severe weather warnings and heavy snowfalls across the Snowy Mountains may impact road conditions. Be careful, be patient and drive to conditions.
