Meet the team | Whittens
With a mobilised workforce of 220 employees, more than 11,000m³ of concrete poured, and 1,860 tonnes of steel reinforcement installed, Whittens is making an impact at Snowy 2.0. Impressive milestones such as the successful completion of the project’s first tunnel lining concrete pour emphasise the team's momentum and capability.
Whittens operates nationally as a leading specialist civil contractor, delivering major concrete structures and earthworks for some of Australia’s largest renewable energy, mining, and infrastructure projects.
At Snowy 2.0, Whittens’ skilled crews are based at both Tantangara and Talbingo, where they are responsible for assembling and dismantling formwork, installing steel reinforcement, and casting concrete for the huge structures that connect the water intake to the gate shaft and ultimately, to the Snowy 2.0 power station.
In construction, this scope of work is typically known as FRP – Forming, Reinforcement and Pouring concrete.
Whittens was established in NSW 24 years ago by CEO Louise Whitten and Director Clayton Whitten - its first job, pouring a concrete kerb. Over the years, Whittens has grown into a major player in civil construction, but some things haven’t changed: an unwavering commitment to safety, quality and execution.
That dedication is visible across the workforce. Nick Arena, Project Manager at Tantangara, says the whole team is crew is close-knit and united by a shared sense of purpose: delivering hydropower infrastructure that’s designed to operate for the next 150 years.
“You get a great sense of mateship with Whittens,” says Nick, who joined the company in 2017.
“A lot of the team are footy players, and the work environment carries that same team spirit – we back each other and work together to achieve our goals.”
What sets Whittens apart? As a family-owned business, Louise and Clayton recognise that their people are their strength. Many of the Snowy 2.0 crew have been with the business for over five years – an impressive achievement in the construction industry and a reflection of the strong site leadership and supportive culture the company fosters.
With offices and facilities across New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia, Whittens recently opened a new base in Cooma to support its growing operations.
Louise Whitten says the business remains focused on delivering outstanding results for client Future Generation Joint Venture and project owner Snowy Hydro, while continuing to expand its role and capabilities on the Snowy 2.0 project.
