NAIDOC Week 2023

Wolgalu-Wiradjuri man Shane Herrington led smoking ceremonies, cultural workshops and yarns at Snowy 2.0’s remote worksites in August, after a blizzard during NAIDOC Week pushed our plans back. Marica, Lobs Hole, and Tantangara are on Wolgalu Country. Rock Forest, Cooma Office, and Polo Flat are on Ngarigo Country.

The Snowy 2.0 workforce, both First Nations and non-Indigenous members, appreciated the chance to learn from a Traditional Owner. Shane’s visits to Lobs Hole, Marica and Tantangara construction sites featured bush tucker, tool making, rope making, music and more.

Construction workers were fascinated while helping Shane make a 3-ingredient resin and watching him fashion it into a custom handle for the stone they’d helped him work. Bull rush reeds produced a palatable snack, but its wholesomeness could not compete with lemon myrtle cheesecake.

This two-day excursion was Shane’s third visit to Snowy 2.0 sites, and on this occasion his smoking ceremonies were for cleansing rather than welcoming. He found the spirits most in need of cleansing to be at Lobs Hole, and Shane explained these were not necessarily all Aboriginal ancestors, as Settlers had lived in the deep ravine for generations, too.

At Marica, normally chilly at 1400 metres altitude, the sun came out and Shane found the spiritual atmosphere warm and pleasant as well. Tantangara was wintry and windy, and the group warmed themselves by keeping beat with clap sticks to Shane’s yidaki, or didgeridoo.

NAIDOC Week 2022

Local Elders visited our Snowy 2.0 Lobs Hole worksite during NAIDOC Week (3 - 10 July 2022) to provide a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at a new laboratory constructed for the project.

A smoking ceremony is an ancient indigenous custom in Australia that involves burning various native plants to produce smoke. The smoke cleanses and also wards off bad spirits from the people and the land and make pathways for a brighter future.

The lab testing includes soil and earthwork, construction materials (concrete, grout and raw materials) as well as environmental tests related to spoil and water management across the project. The Lobs Hole facility will be the largest of the four laboratories on the Snowy 2.0 project and will operate with 10-15 laboratory technicians and engineers.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme was Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!  It celebrates those who have championed and led change over generations.

March - April 2022

Future Gen hosted some 100 members of the local community at Tantangara on 22 March 2022 to celebrate the commissioning of TBM Florence.

Construction is progressing across all Snowy 2.0 worksites.

TBM Kirsten Commissioning Event at ECVT, Lobs Hole

In early December 2021 Future Generation & Snowy Hydro celebrated the commissioning of the second TBM Kirsten. The 200 metre 3,350 tonne, 11m diameter TBM will excavate the 6.6km emergency cable and ventilation tunnel (ECVT). The TBM was named after young indigenous Astrophysicist Kirsten Banks who also attended the ceremony.
